Something that came to me recently. Was the idea of consent and how it can be abused.
Whether it's to do with rape. (We're very good at defending the perpetrator and telling them that their actions were OK because it is all dependent on what the victim was wearing, how drunk they were, or were they flirting etc.) or whether it is to do with organ donation (if someone is on the organ donation register. The family have the last say if the organs will be utilised or not)
If it's to do with hugging someone, personal space or just generally doing something that you didn't get permission to do. You get the idea.
Something that struck me today was in relation to death and veganism. (What a surprise, the two most common topics I talk about)
Vegans are forever saying that animals don't want to die. We know this because animals cry and scream in pain when they are being slaughtered. They are unable to give consent in the same way humans are able to.
The whole idea of humane slaughter is ironic because individually the words mean two entirely different things.
One meaning to show kindness, mercy and compassion. The other meaning death and murder. Put the two words together and hey presto you've just created a cognitive dissonant human.
There is no such thing as humane slaughter and as much as you might try to explain it or make sense of it. There really isn't when you break the two words down individually. Then you see that putting them together doesn't make sense.
Except for one example. One example is euthanasia. Where a person gives consent for their own death and their own will. For reasons such as a terminal diagnosis where they will suffer etc. Oh but wait... That's illegal. Funny that hm? That beings with the ability to give consent to their own death, cannot die humanely because it's illegal. Yet animals who are unable to give consent. Well sure that's totally fine!
Food for thought.
I am a 25 year old nurse, who is trying to find herself. This blog will contain epiphanies I have, my yoga progress and other such things. Enjoy. :)
