It's International Nurses Day today! I won a hamper in a nurses day competition so I'm over the moon! Woohoo!! So with this in mind, I want this post to be a friendly reminder to all nurses out there. LOOK. AFTER. YOURSELF. FIRST I feel like far too many nurses put their job first, putting their title as nurse first. Creating nurse as their identity. I'm proud to be a nurse don't get me wrong. But nursing isn't all that life is about. It's important to remember that you are an individual and you need to look after and at yourself first. Sit down for a minute... Close your eyes (after reading this sentence of course) and think, "what defines me?" The first thing that will probably come to your head is the fact that you are your job title... now ask... "what am I?" just sit with that question for a while because that is a tough one. If you have an answer, ask the question... "who is the one who came up with that answer" Don't freak out if you don't have an answer. It's ok. I haven't figured it out either. Just embrace it. Nursing is a difficult profession. It's blood sweat, urine, faeces, abdominal fluid, vomit, and tears. Nurses are a very strong bunch who sometimes forget that this doesn't make them invincible. There is a time and a place for letting emotions out. If you think that having a gurn in the sluice is gonna jepordise your ability to give high standard care. Then what I would suggest you do is take a moment in the sluice. Take 7 deep breaths. On the inhale, count to four; hold the breath for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for four seconds. Complete 7 breaths for this. Whilst doing this try and gauge in with your feet. Grounding into your feet will help you to feel more centred, more in control and give you a little jolt "ok I can do this" Then when you get home, or maybe when you get to your car. Let your emotions out whatever way you feel comfortable doing so, cry? Stare into the distance? Go to the gym? Run? whatever you gotta do to help you deal with the initial pain, do it. In so many ways you are super human. But in so many basic ways you are only human. Don't ever let yourself forget that. Credit where credit is due, you can handle a lot. But don't allow yourself to not deal with issues and let them become unresolved. You got this! #HappyInternationalNursesDaya
