I discovered a few weeks ago I've put on half a stone. I'm not a hefty heafer but I'm boarder line overweight. I've a BMI of 24, or was it 25? I can't remember. Either way, it's still in the healthy range. Not also taking into account that I do have a bit of muscle on me from working and previously working out. However, this new year I'm gonna try and focus on healthier eating and exercising as regularly as I can with shift work. So I've downloaded this book called the "Cando diet" I'm telling my mum about it too as she's also trying to lose weight.
Now I'm not gonna go all skinny minnie or anything. I like the curves I have, but I want to be more toned and healthy. Surprisingly I get a lot of people telling me I don't need to diet. I don't see it as a diet, I see it as improving my health and well being by taking control of what I put in my body and how active I am. Surprisingly a lot of people tell me I don't need to exercise either and this is why we as a nation are growing more and more complacent to the idea of obesity. (Not saying I'm obese by the way) We assume that as a woman, if you're active and fit that you're trying to lose weight. No, not the case! Worldwide, 9.8 million fractures are caused by osteoprosis every year Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men due to the hormone "oestrogen" floating around our blood stream. With 1/3 women developing osteoporosis compared to 1/5 men. (cited, http://www.iofbonehealth.org/facts-statistics) One way of preventing the onset of osteoporosis or just prolonging your life is by exercise. It is not just for people looking to lose weight. When I was a member of a gym in Belfast quite frequently I saw a lot of older people at the gym using the weight machines and doing cardio. I imagine that the reason they do this is because they've been told by their GP that they have osteoporosis, atherosclerosis (build up of plaque in the arteries, see kids? Plaque isn't just on your teeth lol!) heart and lung problems. I imagine that if they were able to talk to their younger selves they'd tell them "eat right and exercise more!" So why can't we take this lesson from this older generation? More and more people are developing diabetes and other related co-morbidities every day due to obesity! They say that prevention is better than the cure, so let's make that change together and start with the individual.... You! Let's try to set a realistic goal over the course of the next year! Let's try and eat a more balanced diet and not listen to your mind telling you to stop running on the treadmill. Let's make a proper change this year so we can look back on ourselves in a years time and say "Yeah I did it! I struggled, but I did it!" You can click the link below to buy the book that I am taking on at the minute and start this journey with me :)
